12th March, 2025
Every child should feel a sense of belonging, especially during times of faith and celebration. Ramadan is a time of reflection, community, and spiritual connection, and we want to ensure that our Muslim children in foster care feel supported and valued.
We are incredibly proud to be in our fourth year of partnership with the Hussain Foundation in our South East region. The Hussain Foundation is a charity created in memory of Hussain, a young man whose legacy is built on empowering and supporting young people. Since we began working together in March 2022, we will have delivered 75 Ramadan packs, including this year’s distribution.
Each Ramadan pack includes:
- A copy of the Quran
- A prayer mat
- Prayer beads (Tasbih)
- Miswak (a natural toothbrush)
- A daily prayer book
- Dates and sweets for iftar
- For our younger children under 10, we’ve also included Prophet Stories, generously donated by Mini and Mama Books, to help them engage with their faith in an age-appropriate and meaningful way.
One of our young people’s responses truly touched our hearts:
“Oh my, is this mine?! I can’t believe it! This is a very special gift!”
Ramadan is a time of unity, reflection, and spiritual connection. For our young people in foster care, feeling supported in their faith is essential. Whether it’s having the right resources to observe Ramadan, being surrounded by understanding carers, or simply knowing that their traditions are acknowledged. By providing Ramadan packs and raising awareness we aim to create a sense of comfort and inclusion during this special month.
Since Ramadan 2022, we have also been taking young people to Open Iftar, an incredible initiative that brings together people from all backgrounds to share in the experience of breaking fast. This year, we will be attending the Open Iftar at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), as part of the Ramadan Tent Project’s Ramadan Festival 2025.
Open Iftar is a truly special experience, not just for our Muslim young people, but for anyone wanting to learn more about Ramadan. It creates a space where people from all backgrounds can come together, share a meal and connect through a shared sense of community and understanding. For our young people it’s a reminder that no one is ever alone during Ramadan, there is always a welcoming place to break fast and be part of something bigger.
To ensure that our carers and team are aware of prayer and iftar times, I’ve shared a Ramadan prayer timetable with them. This helps us be mindful when contacting carers and young people, ensuring we don’t disrupt important moments of worship.
A huge thank you to our South East Registered Manager, Sandy, who went above and beyond to support our Muslim team members. She arranged for travelling prayer mats for all of us, a thoughtful and heartfelt gesture that meant so much.
We recently hosted a Ramadan workshop for carers, the team, children, and young people. It was an opportunity for everyone, Muslim or not, to learn about Ramadan, ask questions, and understand how to best support our young people during this special time.
