Recently, we caught up with Capstone Care Leavers Trust recipient, Dan, from his current base onboard a super yacht in the Mediterranean Sea.
Having started sailing while in school, Dan always felt at home near the water, trying his hand in jobs such as a lifeguard and swimming instructor after leaving care. However, it was working on boats that he aspired to, although this dream seemed out of reach.
That’s where the Capstone Care Leavers Trust came in. After being referred to the Trust, Dan applied for funding for the super yacht cadetship which would enable him to achieve his goal.
Through the cadetship, Dan spent eighty days at sea, learning all he could while accumulating the miles to be able to undertake the yacht master exam, opening the door to land his first job on board.
These days Dan works aboard a 50–60-meter private yacht and has sailed to some stunning locations around the globe thanks to the cadetship. Some of his favourite stops being the crystal-clear waters of Croatia to the magnificent black mountain of Montenegro.
Dan’s story is an inspiring one, and though the Trust was able to provide that extra bit of support to help him achieve his goal, it was Dan’s hard work and determination which has got him where he is today. While he is happy with life onboard, Dan is not idle, now he has his sights set on his next goal, becoming an officer of the watch on deck.
We can’t wait to see what he does next.
