We recently caught up with young person and budding freelance media producer, Elliot Kerr, he’s also a new Capstone Care Leavers Trust recipient.
As a care leaver, Elliot has recently been approved a grant for camera equipment that will further his media business. He talked to us about his experiences and finding his niche.
It was clear from the start of our conversation that Elliot was eloquent, funny and real, talking with great candour about the effect of his time in care and the active decision that he makes each day to not let those experiences define him.
He told us,
And fuel him it certainly has, Elliot considers himself lucky to have found his vocation behind the camera. His experiences enriching his talent, he told us that having always felt like an outsider this helps him to connect with what he does, giving him a unique point of view.
Elliot comes across confident and outgoing today, however, this was not always the case. While he has always had an interest in media and communications, but has also battled with anxiety sometimes unable to leave the house. As well as his supportive girlfriend, Elliot cites his vocation as forcing him out of his comfort zone.
He had to get himself out there, while filming his social skills improved little by little along with his confidence.
Today he is self-employed and when not behind the camera, he can be found raising funds for charity with is competition-winning costumes at Comic-Con.
Elliot was beyond delighted that his grant was approved and is looking forward for future projects.
“Being able to have a second camera is going to make all of the difference.” He tells, “I have been using one camera for over a year, now with this second camera I can create higher quality productions. Sometimes the interviews I conduct are really sensitive, so being able to catch B-footage is crucial.”
