When Doug was 12 years old his life changed dramatically when he was placed in foster care. Doug was facing some challenges at home and his behaviour was reflecting the difficulties. Doug is now 21 and has just started a degree in Social Work whilst staying put with Foster Carer, Keith. From an early age, Doug’s ability to reflect on his own circumstances made him an ideal candidate to talk with people who were thinking of fostering.
Doug was given the opportunity to become involved in the Skills to Foster training at Capstone, where he would present his understanding of foster care to prospective foster carers. Doug decided to apply his life experiences towards a future in social work or supporting children, and he began an apprenticeship in Children’s Rights and worked alongside Trafford Council sitting on their panel to approve prospective foster carers.
Doug benefitted from educational support from Capstone’s teaching team who supported him to sit the exams he needed to apply for university courses. Doug’s commitment to achieve his goal has led him to gain the grades to begin a degree in Social Work at the University of Salford.
Supervising Social Worker, Dawn, said; “We wish Doug all the very best in his future and we’re pleased to have supported Doug to achieve his goals, we’re all very proud of everything he has achieved.”
