Gemma is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of using personal experiences to drive positive change. She’s a care leaver who has not only overcome significant challenges but is also carving out a successful career for herself. Even more than that, she’s dedicated to improving the lives of others who have been through the care system by calling for reform and using her career to further this cause that she so whole heartedly believes in.
From a young age, Gemma knew she wanted to make a difference. Now in her final year at university and training to become a barrister, she is well on her way to achieving her goal. Alongside her studies, she has secured a prestigious legal placement and co-founded Beyond, a charity dedicated to supporting care leavers as they transition to independence.
Her mantra? “Turn adversity into advantage.” And she is doing exactly that.
Navigating university life as a care leaver comes with its own unique challenges, and Gemma was open about the importance of support networks. One organisation that played a crucial role in her journey was the Capstone Care Leavers Trust. When her laptop broke during her third year, an essential tool for both her coursework and placement, she reached out to the Trust for assistance.
Not only did the Trust help her obtain the MacBook she needed, but they also provided vouchers so she could purchase professional clothing suitable for her work placement. This kind of support, Gemma says, is about much more than financial assistance. It’s about building confidence and ensuring care leavers have the tools they need to succeed.
“When I was in touch with Zoe from Capstone Care Leavers Trust, I loved that she was always focused on the positive, she always had my back and really fought my corner.”
Gemma was overwhelmed with gratitude upon receiving the Trust’s support, describing her excitement as “jumping up and down with joy” when she read the email confirming the funding.
Gemma is dedicated to advocating for improvements in the care system. Through her charity work, legal ambitions, and personal experiences, she is committed to ensuring that care leavers receive the support they need to thrive.
Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. Gemma was nominated for FosterTalk’s Care Leaver of the Year award in 2022, an honour she describes as unexpected but deeply appreciated recognition of her passion and commitment.
“It was so nice to be recognised, you don’t expect it. My passion is to help those leaving care, so something like this always takes you by surprise.”
As Gemma continues her journey one thing is clear, her impact is only just beginning.
