How do DBS Checks Work?

Navigation:

If you're applying to become a foster carer for the first time, you might be wondering about the eligibility checks you’ll need to go through to become a foster carer and welcome a foster child into your home. In this guide, we’ll explain how DBS checks work, what they check for and how long they take. Along with how fostering regulations impact your DBS check.

What does DBS Stand for

Put simply, DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. It is named after the government department responsible for carrying out the checks.

Types of DBS Check

There are three types of DBS checks that can be carried out in the UK, excluding the disbarred list. They’re nothing to worry about and are designed to maximise the safety of children and vulnerable people. The main types of DBS check include;

  • Basic DBS check: This checks for unspent convictions and conditional cautions.
  • Standard DBS check: This includes the same data as the basic DBS check, but also includes reprimands and final warnings in addition.
  • Enhanced DBS check: The enhanced DBS check features everything included in a basic and standard DBS check, along with any information from the authorities that they may deem relevant to becoming a foster carer.
  • Barred List check: This is an additional check to ensure that you are not barred from working with children or vulnerable people.

When you apply to become a foster carer, an enhanced DBS check will be carried out with a Barred List Check to ensure the safety of your potential foster child.

How long does a DBS check take?

While a basic check usually takes about two weeks to complete, an enhanced DBS check typically takes longer. It can take 4-5 weeks for an enhanced DBS and barred check to take place, depending on how long it takes to gather the necessary information from the authorities. It’s important to make sure all information on your DBS check is as accurate as possible as incorrect information can result in delays to the process.

Why is a DBS check needed for foster carers?

DBS checks are carried out on foster carers because they have a commitment to the care of children and young people. Carrying out a DBS is an important safeguarding procedure to ensure that foster children are in a safe and protected environment.

Who needs a DBS check in foster care?

DBS checks are a legal requirement for anyone applying to be a foster carer. But it can also include;

  • If you’re applying to become a foster carer with your partner.
  • If you have adult children, lodgers or other adult family members that live with you.
  • If you live with your partner, even if they are not applying to be a foster carer too.
  • If you don’t live with your partner, but they will visit your home and have contact with your foster child.
  • Any regular visitors to the fostering household

Even if you’re applying to be a foster carer on your own, other adults in your household and any non-residential partners should have a DBS check for safeguarding purposes.

Who applies for the DBS check?

You won’t need to arrange the DBS check yourself, the team here at Capstone Foster Care will arrange it as part of your foster care application process. Your DBS check will need to be renewed every three years and may need renewing if there is any significant change to your household.
